Of One’s Own Volition — Memento Mori is Krištof Kintera’s quiet and subtle memorial beneath Prague’s Nusle Bridge, a structure long associated with public grief and loss. The bridge opened in 1973, during the communist era, and became known for the many people who took their lives there before later safety barriers changed its history. Kintera’s altered streetlamp bends upward toward the massive concrete bridge above, turning an ordinary object into a gesture of remembrance. Rather than explaining or dramatizing the tragedy, the work holds space for those who disappeared under the pressures of private pain, daily life, and a city marked by its pre- and post-1989 history.
